How/where are you celebrating your birthday and with whom? “My actual birthday I’ll be working, but I’m taking Friday off to go to my grandparents’ lake house in South Carolina (Ralph Norman’s district) with my family. It’s my favorite place in the world.”

How did you get your start in journalism? “I actually got started as a high school teacher in California because I recognized that democracy only works if you have educated voters. The other half of that equation is a free and independent press to tell those voters what their elected officials are up to. I followed the struggles of Brazil’s democracy as a Brasília-based correspondent for Bloomberg during the re-election and impeachment of Dilma Rousseff, a massive corruption investigation and a devastating recession. That experience in some ways helped prepare me to cover turbulent politics in my own country.”

What’s an interesting book/article you’re reading now or finished? And why? “I’m reading ‘Bonjour tristesse,’ by Françoise Sagan. I read it in English in high school, and now I’m reading it (very slowly) in French. My two life goals were to get to Brazil before the 2014 World Cup and learn French before I turned 30. I got the former and I’m a few years behind on the latter…”

What is a trend going on in the U.S. or abroad that doesn’t get enough attention? “The humanitarian crisis in Yemen. Americans, and especially their elected representatives, should understand what level of support we are providing to the Saudi-led coalition and why.”

How is the Trump presidency going? “I’d prefer not to comment, other than to say I hope all our leaders are guided by integrity, justice and wisdom.”

What’s a fun fact that people in Washington might not know about you? “I knew I wanted to marry my now-fiancé when he chased off charging mountain goats after we climbed Snow Creek Wall in Washington state many years ago. Now we spend most of our weekends heading west on I-66 to go climbing and trail running.”
