Regarding Lawrence Wittner’s recent op-ed, ‘College Students Paying More… for Less.‘
Since retiring, I’m now a part-time Adjunct Professor in a widely-recognized private University graduate professional program. I teach in my specialty, on-campus to live students weekly. My students receive as good an education from me (based on three decades of actual experience) as they can get from full-time academics with limited ‘real world’ practice — so the fact adjuncts are replacing some cloistered ivory tower denizens is far from a bad thing.
But the issue of adjuncts is peripheral to the true problem — which is the false narrative that ‘everyone needs to attend college.’ They don’t! In fact, more shouldn’t. Contrary to what Mr Wittner laments, what we need are fewer unemployables walking around with degrees such as Socialist Femi-nazi Gender Studies… not more.
For the most part, what is taught as ‘liberal arts’ in American undergrad colleges today has nothing to do with expanding horizons. It is the opposite. ‘Liberal arts’ undergrads are no longer ‘educated’. They are brainwashed with socialist political correctness by largely marxist-leaning tenured faculties, who pressure students (both covertly and overtly) to reject any contrary thought. Enlightened students capable of independent thought is the last thing most college faculties want.
The overwhelming purpose of American college education today is to act as a finishing school for the brainwashing begun in the elementary and secondary schools by socialist union teachers who themselves were brainwashed in college “Education” departments. There is little difference between most American public elementary schools today (with their mandatory attendance) and the ‘re-education’ gulags of Marxist dictatorships. Why do you suppose so many of the new products of our ‘education’ system are enamored with socialism despite the fact no socialist system has ever succeeded?
In the old Soviet Russia, some of the highest paid government employees were college professors — because they were charged with indoctrinating young minds with Marxist dogma to perpetuate the socialist state. That’s what you should consider whenever you hear demands for more money for ‘higher education.’ An education that encourages free thinking is the last thing ‘education’ advocates want to impart to impressionable youth.
As a Florida resident and taxpayer I totally supported Gov. Scott’s efforts to force our State University System (of which I’m an alumnus) to focus on teaching students the skills necessary to find a good job. He was right, that we have too damn many ‘liberal arts’ degree holders (whose degrees were subsidized by taxpayers) serving coffee at Starbucks.
Contrary to Mr Wittner’s thesis, the object of education IS to prepare people for jobs — not to produce over-educated slackers, living in their parents’ basement, whining that the rest of us owe them free stuff — and $15 an hour to ask if we want fries with our meal.
