Report: Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon expected to have knee surgery

Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon came out of Thursday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens multiple times, gritting through pain to help finish out the 34-23 win.

He stated after the game he would be OK because “I finished out the game.” That might not be the case.

Reports indicate Mixon will need arthroscopic surgery on his knee and sought a second opinion.

The issue is not thought to be serious through the lens of the season, but could keep Mixon out for a couple games, via Adam Schefter. The good news for the Bengals is they have 10 days off until they play at Carolina.

Plans have been in place and executed for Mixon to be the “bellcow” running back this season, and he went for 149 total yards on 23 touches in the opener against the Indianapolis Colts, then carried 18 times for 81 yards against Baltimore.

“He said something was bothering him in his knee after one play on the goal line,” Marvin Lewis said on Friday. “We have a little time for all of these (injured players to recover), so we’ll see how they come back.”

Giovani Bernard would take over the full-time running back role in Mixon’s absence. He carried five times for 25 yards on Thursday.

Mixon discussed the process of going back into the win after the game.

“It felt weird,” he said. “My knee was hurting. Other than that, it’s just the mental side of it. You always want to play at 100 percent (health), but when something is bothering you it’s hard mentally. I just had to check back in mentally and physically tough it out. And that’s pretty much what I did.”

Mixon said he had to convince coaches to put him back in the game.

“Yeah. I was like, ‘I’m going to go back in,'” Mixon said. “And they were like, ‘All right. You don’t need to if you can’t.’ I was like, ‘I’m going to go back in, coach.’ And we made it happen.”

At the time, he was unsure of the severity.

“I don’t know,” he said. “It’s just some weird tweak.”
