Apple Harvest Festival provides more than fruit — it provides history

But don’t forget about apples.

At Los Luceros Ranch, there’s more than 1,300 apple trees ready to be picked on Sunday for the Third Annual Apple Harvest Festival, lasting from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Patrick Moore, director of New Mexico Historic Sites, said the real treat is the history.

“This spot is actually the northern reach of El Camino Real. A lot of people think it ended in Santa Fe, but it actually continues all the way up her," he said. "And every Hispanic community traces its lineage in northern New Mexico back to this location."

Moore said 1,600 people showed up to the festival last year

“We don’t know how many we’ll have (this year), but we wouldn’t be surprised if it were two to 3,000."

He added there will also be live music, food and, of course—apples. The festival is free, but any donations will go towards preserving the ranch’s history.

“This played host not just to the Hispanic communities that were up here, but the Pueblo communities,” Moore said.
