'Fortnite' Introducing New Legendary 'Port-A-Fortress' Grenade This Week

FortniteEpic

Epic is continually introducing not only new weapons to Fortnite but also new non-weapon tools that can help change the tide of battle in other ways. This season has brought us the Rift-to-Go and the Grapple Gun, but it’s also going to give us one parting gift before season 6, a sequel to the Port-a-Fort in the form of the Port-a-Fortress.

It appears the item is going to be a new Legendary rarity grenade that spawns not just a tower like the Port-a-Fort, but an entire base instead, giving you much more cover, or cover for an entire team.

The item is being teased in-game right now, meaning it should probably arrive as soon as this Tuesday or Wednesday with Fortnite season 5 ending on Thursday. If you look closely at the art, you can see what shape the fortress is going to take once the item arrives.

It looks to be three panels wide and four panels tall with a front door and what seems like four turrets on each corner. If this is a square shape, it’s much, much larger than the Port-a-Fort which has a 1×1 base and is only three panels tall. I’m curious if the fortress will be made out of metal, like the fort, or brick, like…most fortresses you would imagine. If it’s metal that’s a whole lot of protection. I’m also curious if the legendary rarity might mean the material spawns fully formed for instant protection, rather than something that can be shot down as it builds.

Will this be a game-changing item?

Probably not.

The Port-a-Fort, while fun, is not exactly a high skill, highly competitive tactical item. Sure, it has its uses in certain contexts, but I don’t think simply making the structure larger is going to change all that much unless the fortress spawns with a bunch of treasure chests inside or something (it won’t). Fortnite building is as much about offense as it is defense, so simply throw up a huge structure is really only good for one of those, instant D. I guess it has its uses for disengaging, but I’m just not sure I see it making much of an impact. It will be fun, no doubt, and I suppose that’s really all that matters. I could see it being used in 50v50 modes especially where you can shield an entire cluster people allies all at once.

It seems like Port-a-Forts and now the Port-a-Fortress will be around come season 6, but I do wonder if Rift-to-Go might be vaulted considering we are presumably leaving the Rift era which was season 5. I hope the Grapple Gun stays, but we’ll see.

Does the Port-a-Fortress have you excited, or is it kind of a meh addition in your eyes?
