SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A teen in KELOLAND is using her birthday to give back to the those in need.
Crimson McCall turned 13 Saturday.
Instead of a birthday party, she and some of her friends helped out at the St. Francis House.
Crimson McCall says most 13-year-olds for their birthday want:
"Gift cards, money and stuff," McCall said.
Instead, McCall decided to do something else.
"We are at the St. Francis House and we're volunteering. It's my birthday. We're doing my birthday party here and we're just helping people out," McCall said.
She says this isn't the first time she's given back to the community on her birthday.
"Last year, I didn't do presents at all. We just donated all of the presents to the Sanford's Children's Hospital," McCall said.
McCall says volunteering is important to her.
"It's just a nice thing to do. Some people don't have as good as lifestyles as we do, so we really just wanted to help them out," McCall said.
McCall's friends were happy to help.
"They were like, 'Oh, ok, that's different but ok.' I think it's nice that they're so supportive. I think it's really helpful. I know I wouldn't be able to do it by myself ," McCall said.
Help that the St. Francis House says is greatly appreciated.
"They have probably done two days worth of work in the hour and a half they've been here. I was really impressed. It's nice to see so many young people out and being part of their community and doing service. Excellent idea for Crimson to have," Tom Foster said.
McCall says for her next birthday, she wants to volunteer at the Sioux Falls Humane Society.
