A MUM who splashed out £7,200 ($13,000AUD) on her son’s first birthday party has revealed the heartbreaking reason why she wanted to make the occasion extra special.
Jackie Lam, 31, from Melbourne, Australia, struggled to conceive for months and suffered a miscarriage two years ago.
Her son Lachlan was her “rainbow baby”, born following the tragic loss of that child, so she decided to go all out to mark his first birthday milestone.
Jackie told FEMAIL: “I have always been someone who is into parties and events, and someone who likes to bring people together.
“I knew I wanted this day to be special, and it was bittersweet.”
Jackie told how she comes from Vietnamese heritage, and in her culture the first birthday is always the most significant – more so than a sixteenth or eighteenth.
She and her partner began planning the party two months before and opted for a Where The Wild Things Are theme.
They invited 140 guests to the waterside venue, and laid on a huge spread of slider burgers, mini pizzas, fish and chips and salads, a dessert station loaded with mini eclairs, tarts, chocolate logs, mango mousse cakes and macaroons, and booze for the grown-ups.
Jackie said a huge chunk of the budget went on catering – with the indulgent desserts being the “biggest ticket items” – while they made some of the decorations themselves.
The proud mum said Lachlan loved the party as much as her friends and family.
“I will never forget that moment when I saw him walking in with his dad. His face lit up when he saw all of the things,” she said.
“I love inspiring imagination, especially in children. Seeing their faces – I get so much pleasure from celebrating things with the people I love.”
She joked that they’ll probably have a McDonald’s party for Lachlan’s second birthday.
While Jackie is aware some people may judge her for spending such a lot of the occasion, she pointed out that she wasn’t “hurting anyone” by doing so.
She explained: “I think our videographer, Aldin Ortinez, put it well. He said, ‘ While I do understand the inherent insanity of paying five figures for a kid's birthday party, there's also a grain of truth in the saying, ‘love knows no boundaries’.”
Jackie added that every child deserves a day to celebrate the love they bring into their parents' lives.
She was so inspired by putting on the event that she’s started a business – A Peachy Affair Events – to help other people throw their dream party.
