Five great ways to use pears in salads, on toast or in dessert


Do you love pears?

What if one were given to you by a bear? (Although on second thought that may cause some wear and tear.) What is the reason for that glare? There is no need to stare. Everything is fine here, we swear. We simply felt like adding some flair to this text before we share five recipes that are ideal for that elusive yet promising chill in the air.

Shaved Fennel, Pear and Tarragon Salad, above. The anise notes of fennel and tarragon shine when they join up with their pal pear. Two medium-ripe Bosc or Anjou are the type you’ll want here — they’re a little sweet, which plays well with the salty cheese and balsamic vinaigrette.

Slaw With Pears, Toasted Hazelnuts and Buttermilk Dressing. Not to stress you out and make you think that you should already be auditioning Thanksgiving recipes or anything, but this would make a nice addition to the holiday table. Or any table, any night.

Hard Cider Rarebit. For the times when you need a quick, comforting, warm, cheesy sauce that gets bubbly and browned in the oven. Oh, wait, that’s all the time, isn’t it? (And in case you were wondering: The pear adds a nice texture and level of sweetness as it rests on slices of thick, crusty bread.)

Roasted Gingery Pears. One of the simplest ways to bake the fruit is also quite adaptable — change up the spices as you like, serve them warm or cold, eat them for dessert or breakfast, and mash leftovers into sauce.

Earl Grey Tea and Brandy Poached Pears. This recipe is like a poached pear meeting a hot toddy, which means it’s basically a cure for the common cold or anything that ails you.
