The 31st Tokyo International Film Festival will kick off on Oct. 25 with a focus on “King of Prism” and late anime director Isao Takahata.
The festival showcases movies with a wide range of themes and genres from around the world, and it is committed to sharing the joy of watching films, promoting exchanges among filmmakers and developing the future for cinema.
The festival also offers TIFF Plus events, which are aimed at promoting Japanese pop culture trends and adding genre-crossing cultural movements to the TIFF. They shine the spotlight on tourism, food, fashion, music, anime, e-sports and sports.
The anime-themed TIFF Plus event will be held on Oct. 30 at the EX Theater Roppongi in collaboration with the Anime Film Festival Tokyo.
It will feature “King of Prism,” which centers around young male idols and has become popular for its screenings. Audience members can cheer and shout during concert sequences and even read out subtitles for dialogue spoken by the characters.
TIFF Plus will also pay tribute to Studio Ghibli Inc. co-founder Takahata, who died earlier this year. In addition to his directorial debut film, “Horus: Prince of the Sun,” his final feature, “The Tale of Princess Kaguya,” will be shown.
