DEWITT, Mich. (WILX) — The first time these teams met this season the Panthers won 37-0.
Tonight’s contest was nothing like that game. A 9-7 win Helped the Dewitt Panthers clinch a district title.
But the win was not possible without stellar defense.
“Our kids made plays when they needed to, we didn’t score a lot, but they did a good job on defense, but we’re moving on and that’s all that matters to us,” said Panther coach Rob Zimmerman.
The winning score came from an unlikely source. Freshman Nicholas Flegler was put in to save the day after the first stringer was injured.
To coach Zimmerman, this group is a special one, perhaps one of the most memorable programs, and to advance to another game means more than one would think.
“You don’t want to see it end when you have kids like this, not only talent wise, but great character, great leadership and just great experience, but the biggest thing is that they get an opportunity to play again, they’ve earned it,” said Zimmerman.
Coach Zimmerman says that the opportunity to play at home during the playoffs is a blessing
“That’s pretty special for them, the seniors get to play three playoff games at home, and not many get to do that so that’s a great thing for them.”
They’ll host Farmington next Friday in the Regional Final.
