Freddie Mercury’s wild homosexual lifestyle off stage was left out of the Bohemian Rhapsody film for commercial reasons, helping the band and movie studio earn millions of dollars more.

John Houlihan, Senior Vice President of Fox Music, who oversaw the movie’s score, confirmed that avoiding the sexually charged nature of Mercury’s love life meant that the film could remain PG-13.

A movie with Rami Malek dramatizing Mercury’s infamous gay escapades and adventurous multi-partner lifestyle would have required an R-rating.

The decision to tone it down makes it a family-friendly ‘movie for the masses,’ Houlihan told DailyMailTV.

Speaking at an event in Los Angeles, Houlihan stood firm against critics who blamed the movie’s shortcomings on glossing over Mercury’s hedonistic lifestyle.

He said: ‘Nothing is hidden away. I think that the decision was made to have a PG-13 film that can go extremely wide. When you look at quadrants of film, a rated R film gets very, very limited.

‘Essentially, it’s a family film. Queen is family music. The band has always hit upon many, many generations of fans, and this is a great film where they can all go. It’s a movie for the masses.’

He added: ‘I think a lot of people are judging the depth of the film addressing Freddie’s sexuality based on three trailers and a lot of word of mouth.

‘I think the movie goes in depth into the interior of Mr. Freddie Mercury and his trials and tribulations and his life journey.

‘I think it covers it in a really true and emotional way. I think when people watch the entire movie, there will be a consensus that it’s very true. I know Freddie’s close friends give it a thumbs up.’

The promiscuous singer, who died of AIDS-related pneumonia in 1991 aged 45, led a notoriously debauched life: guests at one of his parties were greeted by hermaphrodite dwarves serving cocaine from trays strapped to their heads.

He reportedly celebrated his birthday in 1979 with a five-day orgy and once boasted: ‘I’ve had more lovers than Elizabeth Taylor.’

He also said: ‘My sex drive is enormous. I’ve got a big bed and it can sleep six.’

Rolling Stone critic Peter Travers writes: ‘In struggling to make a salable PG-13 movie out of an R-rated rock life, leaves you feeling that something essential and elemental is missing.

‘No… authenticity seeps into the scenes of Mercury’s hedonistic gay lifestyle as a partygiver, participating in orgies that come off here as more mild than wild.’

Many reviewers praised Malek’s performance as the iconic Queen frontman but felt the story was lacking.

‘The trouble isn’t really star Rami Malek, who gives a mesmerizing if opaque performance as Mercury. The problem is that the movie doesn’t have anything interesting to say.’ Ty Burr from the Boston Globe wrote.

Juan Barquin from Into said: ‘To think about how much is missing from Bohemian Rhapsody hurts, not simply because it doesn’t paint a full picture of the man we know as Freddie Mercury, but because it paints something that doesn’t feel honest.’

Another scathing critique came from Josh Bell from The Inlander, who wrote: ‘Even as a celebration of Queen’s music, Rhapsody is superficial and unconvincing, functioning only as a collection of mediocre music videos.’
