Unequal prizes in fashion awards raises male eyebrows

Hours of preparation and careful planning go into perfecting an outfit, whether you're a man or a woman.

Hours of preparation and careful planning go into perfecting an outfit, whether you're a man or a woman.

The prizes at this week’s Cup and Show week in Christchurch In the battle of the sexes, illustrates sometimes the female comes out on top.

If you are best-dressed woman, you can soak up the rays on a beach on a beach on Hawaii’s Waikiki, if you are the male counterpart, it’s off to the Sunshine Coast for you.

The prizes in Westfield Riccarton Style Stakes have raised the eyebrows of a male competitor, who thinks it is unfair.

Apart from the flights, the man also gets seven nights paid accommodation in Mooloolaba, and over $3000 worth of other gifts where the women’s $5000 prize pool includes a diamond ring and beauty prize pack – no mention of accommodation.

Westfield's Riccarton Style Stakes 2016 lady's winner Katie Flett thinks the prizes are "amazing", but should be shared equally.

One of racing’s most suave men, Michael McAlpine, felt the prizes should be shared equally between the men and women.

McAlpine has won countless fashion titles, each time spending about two hours crafting the look. He thought it was unfair that men took home a lesser prize for the same job.

According to the guidelines, race wear style should be elegant, sophisticated and, apparently most importantly, day wear. Women must wear a headpiece, men must don a suit, tie and hat.

Serial race-goer and fashionista Katie Flett won the Best Dressed Lady title in 2016. On race day she usually gets up super early to give herself time to perfect her hair, make-up, nails, tan and outfit.

She said over the years she had heard of some “very generous” prizes including cars, shopping sprees, and holidays, but most were not split equally.

“If they were equal you might get a few more [men] entering, as a prize makes it a bit more worth it.”

Event organisers did not comment after being made aware of it five days prior to publication.
