Dre Williams' career night sparks Greer into third round of state playoffs

GREER – Greer senior running back Dre Williams has left many defenders in his wake during his career; however, it only took one play Friday to set the tone for what would be a career-high night.

Williams took a handoff on the Yellow Jackets’ first offensive play, and after almost being tackled for a loss, raced 74 yards for a touchdown. That run would be the catalyst that would end with the Yellow Jackets rolling past York 63-40 in the second round of the Class AAAA playoffs at Dooley Field.

More impressive was that Williams finished with a career-high 327 yards rushing on 28 carries with four touchdowns. Williams also had a 22-yard touchdown reception.

“We have an outstanding team,” Williams said. “Where one player ends, another player steps in. Once I set the tone, they come right along with me.”

Greer (11-1) will host Ridge View in the third round of the playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Ridge View (8-3) defeated Westwood, 41-38, in the second round of the playoffs.

Williams, who has committed to play football at Marshall University, spoke about the Yellow Jackets’ first play from scrimmage.

“I saw the hole clogged up,” Williams said. “I knew if I kept my feet moving, kept pounding my feet; I would get through, and I let my vision do the work.”

Greer coach Will Young said Williams is not just a leader on the field, but off the field as well.

“He is a very special player,” Young said. “He obviously has a lot of talent, but he gets everything he has from a great work ethic. He has earned every cent of what he has from hard work.”

Young said he knew the Yellow Jackets would be in a tough matchup with York but was pleased with his team’s resilience.

“This was a tough football team,” Young said. “They play in a tough region. I was just proud of the way our kids continued to answer the bell. We kept a two-score lead throughout the game, and that just showed how tough they are. You cannot win a state championship on just talent alone.”

Greer senior quarterback Matthew Huff complemented Williams’ stellar night by adding 75 yards on 17 carries with three touchdowns. Huff completed five passes for 81 yards with two touchdowns.

Huff said he was proud of the Yellow Jackets’ offense.

“All you need is one more point than your opponent in the playoffs,” Huff said. “We just have to keep grinding and moving the ball. It’s refreshing, when you have a back (Williams) like that, and other weapons, you can do whatever you want.”

The Cougars took a 21-14 lead midway through the second quarter; however, Huff threw his two touchdown passes toward the end of the half to give Greer a 28-21 lead.

The Yellow Jackets pulled away in the second half as Greer continued to give the ball to Williams.

“When I am in the mood, I just keep going,” Williams said. “I told the coaches, just keep giving me the ball.”
