OTTAWA — Approximately 50 trees will light up the Putnam County District Library as part of the library’s annual Christmas Tree Festival.

The festival is free to attend and is from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 1 to Jan. 3, Mondays through Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

An open house will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 1, where Santa will drop by and Donna Lora will perform at 1 p.m. on the harp and hammered dulcimer. Families are encouraged to bring their cameras to have their photos taken with Santa. Refreshments and beverages will be served.

The festival is sponsored and organized by the library’s Friends of The Library and Putnam County District Library, according to Beth Myers, tree festival chair. The group helps fund the library’s events and when speakers come to the library.

“The festival occurred as an annual event for 19 years until the devastating flooding of 2007 put the 20th festival on hold while the library was in temporary quarters,” Myers said. The festival resumed in 2011 when the library celebrated the first holiday season in its current building.

Myers’ mother Margaret, who was a Friends of the Library member, was one of the women who helped start the festival. There is a tree that will again be on display in her memory.

The trees are decorated by businesses, nursing home residents, service groups and residents.

“This year, we will have Kalida kindergarten and Ottawa Elementary who will have trees on display,” Myers said. There also will be a tree that memorializes local deceased veterans.

Previous years’ trees have been displayed to honor family members who have passed away, and a Writers Group has participated in the festival decorating the trees with books.
