How/where are you celebrating your birthday and with whom? “Well, I got the best gift of all — an averted shutdown with the two-week spending deal. So now instead of working late tonight, I’ll be grabbing margaritas and guac with one of my closest friends, Pallavi Reddy, and watching the new Dolly Parton movie on Netflix.”

How did you get your start in journalism? “I started working for my college paper, The Baylor Lariat, covering the university’s administration. Then I lived in Armenia on a Fulbright grant, thinking I wanted to be an international correspondent. While it was a great experience, I realized during that time that domestic politics was my true interest.”

What’s an interesting book/article you’re reading now or finished? And why? “One of the best articles I’ve read lately is a piece for Outside Magazine by Kyle Dickman on how he barely survived a rattlesnake bite while hiking with his newborn son in a remote part of California. It’s a gripping story from beginning to end.”

What is a trend going on in the U.S. or abroad that doesn’t get enough attention? “There’s an interesting debate going on in the outdoors world on whether people should geo-tag their Instagram photos from hikes or trails, because of a growing concern that some parks are becoming too crowded due to the rise of social media. Opponents of geo-tagging argue that if people really want to visit these beautiful places, they can figure them out on their own.”

How is the Trump presidency going? “There’s never a dull moment.”

What’s a fun fact that people in Washington might not know about you? “In college I interviewed Chuck Norris while he was campaigning for Mike Huckabee’s first run for president. I asked him to name his favorite Chuck Norris joke. ‘Well, they wanted to put Chuck Norris’ face on Mt. Rushmore,’ he said. ‘But the granite wasn’t thick enough for his beard.’”
