CHEBOYGAN — Earlier this week three students from Cheboygan Area High School were presented with certificates for being finalists in an essay contest put on by the Cheboygan Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Phil Oppenheiser of the VFW Post presented the three high school students who participated in the Voice of Democracy Essay Contest with their certificates in a small ceremony Tuesday. This year’s essay topic was “Why My Vote Matters.”

Cheboygan Area High School seniors Max Banek won first place in the local contest, Emma Archer won second place and Scott Cochran won third place in the contest.

“Originally, nearly 50 seniors submitted essays for consideration and these three were the ones who rose to the top,” said Thomas Markham of Cheboygan Area Schools. “Their three recorded essays were then scored by members of the VFW.”

Banek, as the winner, read his essay to the entire student body of Cheboygan Area Schools during their Veterans Day Assembly held at the school November 12.

With Banek winning the local competition, his essay will now move on to the regional and possibly the national championships, where he could win a $10,000 scholarship to college, as well as a trip to the nation’s capitol.

This essay contest was very similar to one that students at Bishop Baraga Catholic School participated in this year as well.

The VFW Post in Cheboygan held a Patriot’s Pen contest with the students at Bishop Baraga, where the seventh grade class was asked to write an essay about what freedom meant to them. The winners of that contest were given an opportunity to win some scholarship money There were 15 essays that were judged. The first place winner, Robert Godfrey, was also given an opportunity to read his essay, titled “Why I Honor the American Flag” to those in attendance.

The first place winner of the contest gets their name and essay submitted to the local VFW district. They have a judging there and the winner there then goes to the state competition. The winner there goes to the national contest. When it gets to that level, there is scholarship money the student can win, which can be used to go to the college of their choice.
