Prevent Wine Teeth And New Wine That Honors Women Trailblazers – Forbes

<div _ngcontent-c14 innerhtml="

It’s a common issue for many of us who enjoy a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, or any other red wine: wine teeth.  Why is it that some of our teeth stain after drinking red wine while others don’t and can anything be done to prevent it while at holiday parties? Turns out, there are some things that can help, according to Uchenna Akosa, DDS, a dentist who heads Rutgers Health University Dental Associates in New Brunswick, N.J., the faculty practice of Rutgers School of Dental Medicine.

The answer involves understanding the relationship between the nature of wine and your tooth enamel, says Akosa.

When you drink red wine, you’re encountering a triple threat to your teeth’s whiteness: anthocyanins, the pigments in grapes that give red wine its rich color; tannins, which help bind the pigment to your teeth; and the acidity found in wine, which etches your enamel, making it more porous and it easier for the stain to stick,” she explains. “The strength of your enamel and how prone you are to plaque build-up is key to how much your teeth might stain.”

With that in mind, here are some of her tips for preventing wine teeth:

  • Brush before, but not immediately after, drinking: “Since plaque can make it look like your teeth are stained, you should brush your teeth 30 minutes before drinking, but not right after since toothpaste can cause more etching,” she recommends.
  • Don’t drink white wine before red wine: “The extra acid in the white wine will exacerbate the staining,” she adds.
  • Schedule regular dental cleanings to keep your enamel in the best shape.

  • Nellie Bly: Journalist, explorer and inventor, Bly was known for her record-breaking trip around the world in 72 days. She was a famed foreign correspondent who launched a new kind of investigative journalism when she worked undercover to report on a mental institution from within – all without so much as a college degree (her story is featured on the emBRAZEN Cabernet Sauvignon).
  • Celia Cruz: Known as the Queen of Salsa, Cruz was an influential ambassador for Latin music and especially so of her homeland Cuba – having the most successful career of any Latin artist of the 20th Century. She overcame sexism, racism and political strife, and after the Cuban revolution, became a symbol of artistic freedom for Cuban American exiles (her story is on emBRAZEN’s Chardonnay bottles).
