WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The city of Westfield is fast coming up on its 350th birthday.
22News was there as the 2,000-pound wooden replica of a birthday cake complete with 350 candles was put in place at Park Square in downtown Westfield Friday. It's the work of the craftsmen at Westek Architectural Woodworking of Westfield who volunteered their time and material for this birthday tribute.
"Well you can see it's 25,6 wide, and it's going to be 15,6 tall when it's done, and we built it to model it after the cake that was built in 1969 by Westek Woodworking," said Bruce Sheible, owner of Westek Architectural Woodworking.
Just across the street, the Westfield Atheneum contains the history of all the city's birthday observances held every fifty years.
"I think the theme this year is really family orientation, we're trying to have as many activities for the younger children to the oldest residents in the city can participate together," Westfield Historian Bob Brown said.
The 350th birthday cake candles will be lit at 2 p.m. New Years Day. The cake will remain at Park Square until June.
Westfield's 350th birthday falls on May 18.
