In making over this Milton living room, the television did not have to be the focus. The homeowners “prefer to read, drink wine, and hang out with their daughter and dog,” says designer Meredith Thayer, also a neighbor. Comfort and durability were key, as was a layout that enabled circulation, since the room connects the entry with the dining room and playroom. Inspired by the warm, earthy tones of a painting (not shown) that the homeowners bought while touring West Coast vineyards, Thayer created a neutral scheme enriched by a mix of natural materials including weathered wood, leather, linen, and metal. “It’s an older home that had been decorated very traditionally,” Thayer says. “Now it reflects the unstuffy way they live.”

The modern feel of the Vermont-made lounge chair from Room & Board adds interest amid the transitional furnishings. “It’s very comfortable, and the open frame doesn’t visually block the fireplace behind it,” Thayer says.

An undyed-wool ottoman from Thayer’s own line tucks under the simple console, at the ready as extra seating or a footrest. The mirror serves as checkpoint on the way out of the house, since the adjacent entry cannot accommodate one.

The throw pillows covered in Zak+Fox cotton-and-linen-blend fabric add a global-inspired feel with patterns that take cues from Chinese and Middle Eastern motifs.

The homeowner fell in love with the Zak+Fox paisley-patterned drapery fabric early in the design process. “Its hints of burgundy informed the color accents in the room,” Thayer says.

Keeping in mind the couple’s child and dog (not to mention red wine), Thayer chose stain-resistant performance linen upholstery for the slope-arm sofa and clean-lined armchair. The woven wool rug stands up to foot traffic.

The coffee table, of rough-hewn French oak with an iron frame and exposed screws, has a rustic industrial vibe that prevents the room from skewing formal.
